Dream Nest is a night lamp designed to help young adults establish a healthier bedtime routine by removing distractions. The lamp only activates when the user places their phone inside its base, triggering a gentle dimming sequence as the bird's head lowers - symbolizing the transition into sleep.
This act of putting the phone away becomes a nightly ritual, signaling the mind to rest and recharge for the day ahead.
I began this project by exploring ways to help young adults unwind when feeling anxious or exhausted. I studied existing anxiety/stress relief products, sketched concepts, and refined my approach to create a product that fosters relaxation through intentional interaction. My research led me to focus on sleep, a fundamental pillar of both physical and mental well-being.
After the research, I landed with a "How might we..?" statement to frame my ideation.

How might we help young adults unwind at the end of the day by creating a calming atmosphere that encourages them to disconnect from their phones and prepare for restful sleep?

During a cold read session with my class, my design intentions were well received. However, feedback highlighted concerns about the lamp's bulky base, which made it feel overly large. Some also suggested that concealing the phone more effectively could reduce temptation and reinforce the habit of disconnecting before bed.
