SolidWorks

My introduction to computational modeling began in my sophomore year with a SolidWorks course. For my final project, I designed and 3D-printed a fully fabricated merry-go-round. Throughout the process, I encountered challenges in translating digital proportions into physical accuracy, requiring multiple iterations to refine the design.

Walnut Disk

Walnut Disk

This walnut disk was entirely handcrafted using traditional woodworking techniques. I began by cutting a circular base with a band saw, then shaped it into a smooth disk using a hand planer. To refine the form, I carefully removed imperfections with a scraper, ensuring a flawless curvature. Finally, I sanded the piece by hand and applied wood oil to enhance the natural walnut grain and achieve a polished finish.

Disk Holder

Disk Holder

Designed to complement the walnut disk, this holder was shaped and finished using similar woodworking methods. The precise hand-planing, scraping, and oil-finishing process ensured a seamless fit and a refined aesthetic that highlights the richness of the walnut.

As a complementary project, I was told to create a disk holder using stacks of veneers and using bent lamination techniques. This disk holder is created using 6 veneer sheets and three rods, Using a scissor-like mechanism, the rods comfortably hold the disk in between.

Wood Curving Mask

Wood Curving Mask

Disk Holder

As part of my final project for the Wood I course, I created a hand-carved mask using only chisels and carving tools—without sandpaper. Inspired by traditional Korean masks, I focused on exaggerated eyebrows and a frowning expression to capture the cultural essence of the design. This project deepened my understanding of hand-tool precision and expressive form in wood sculpting.

Tinplate

While experimenting with tinplate, I explored its flexibility by rolling and layering different-sized pieces to form a globe-like structure. Some pieces were riveted together, creating an intricate layering effect. The structure is assembled with a copper rod, allowing it to rotate and produce a crisp, metallic sound—functioning as both a sculptural piece and a tactile, fidget-like object.
